Gin, Love and Despair w/Screaming…this month in Rock.
I haven’t been as good as I normally am about talking about the shows I’ve been going to lately. Mostly because I haven’t really been seeing any new bands which is a crying pathetic shame. Not that I don’t love my bands I see every chance I get. But I should expand. I really should. That being said I have been to a few shows as of late. Last night caught one of my favorite totally under appreciated Brooklyn acts, the Teenage Prayers, for their Xmas benefit show. It was a totally different Prayers experience. They did almost an entire set of self wrote holiday tunes mostly of the “it’s xmas, the woman I love left me, i’m going to drink alot and then maybe die of despair” vein. Also we had Mr. Tim Prayer behind a keyboard instead of his usual guitar stylings. Sounded just fine though I missed Tim’s stage antics which tend to remind me of a cross between someone who’s really drunk and a southern belle who’s got the vapors. One last note…it hit me last night that Terry Prayer writes the most depressing songs I have ever heard. I mean he’s easily one of my favorites if not my favorite song writer that falls into the “people I actually know personally” catagory, but christ….so. depressing. Listening to his songs is like reliving my greatest heartbreak everytime. Maybe that is why I like them so much though. When I confronted him about this last night he seems fairly unconcerned that he was driving his audience toward suicide mostly because playing them makes him feel better. Way to look out, Terrence.
Other shows…
Planes Mistaken for Stars w/Goes Cube. Great show. Glad I got to go considering it was recently annouced that PMfS was cancelling the rest of their fairwell tour due to a family emergency. They were in great form and played my favorite song off Copper and Stars which is a desert island album for me. Goes Cube…loud as usual. Not as crazy about their newer stuff. I think I’m going to just get the EP they have out Beckon the Dagger God and call it a day with these guys, mark them off the regular show rotation. They play with enough other bands I really like around here that I’ll still catch them some. I guess it comes down to this for me. The guy can scream…the guy can’t sing and they seem to be going toward more and more “sing” vocals.
April Smith and the Great Picture Show. She’s always fun. Girls got pipes and a half and it is always a pleasure to see Marty play. He’s just technically awe inspiring…
…and my new next door neighbor.
Hmmm I think that is it show wise.
2 weeks till I’m home in Radford for 6 days straight. Bringing Häas with me so everyone will meet him too, which I’m excessively excited about. I like him loads (cue awww track) and I’m eager to drag him around the NRV and show him the sights…which we all know will take all of 25 mins (this is Radford (darkside, lightside), this is the Mall, this is Walmart, this is the other Walmart, this is the other other Walmart, Virginia Tech is that way).
